What is web accessibility?
Web accessibility means that people with disabilities can use the Web.
More specifically, Web accessibility means that people with disabilities can perceive, understand, navigate, and interact with the Web. Web accessibility also benefits others, including older people with changing abilities due to aging.
Visitors with disabilities have as much right to access the information on the Internet as anybody else. It is therefore the responsibility of web-designers to create webpages that are accessible to these visitors.
An Introduction to Web Accessiblity (W3C website)
The Bushbury Hill website meets all of the Priority 3 W3C WCAG guidelines. This exceeds the EU recommended level of compliance.
Web Accessibility forms part of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA). Public organisations and large companies are increasingly at risk of being sued if they fail to meet the accessibility needs of their website visitors.
Accessibility Help
To make it easier for you to use this site we've built-in some features which might help you to get around. These features will be of particular assistance to visitors who struggle to use a mouse to navigate around webpages.
You may wish to print out this page for reference.
Accesskeys
The accesskey function allows you to move around a site without using your mouse to click on links.
Using your keyboard, it's possible to jump directly to certain links or certain areas within a page.
By typing alt+[accesskey] (on a PC) or ctrl+[accesskey] (on a Mac), a link becomes highlighted. You can then hit the enter key to activate the link (hitting enter is not necessary in some browsers, e.g. Firefox and Opera).
For your information, here is a list of accesskeys for each of the sections:
Section |
Accesskey |
|---|---|
Home |
H |
Our School |
O |
Classes |
C |
Clubs |
L |
Partnerships |
P |
News |
N |
Contact Us |
U |
This site also employs a number of standard accesskeys as recommended for all UK websites:
Function |
Accesskey |
|---|---|
go to Accessibility page (this page) |
0 (zero) |
go to Home page (alternative standard accesskey) |
1 |
skip page navigation (this brings the main content of a page to the top of the screen) |
S |
go to Site Map |
3 |
go to Contact Us page (alternative standard accesskey) |
9 |
Please note that some assistive technology tools such as the IBM HomePage Reader and WindowEyes already make use of the alt+[accesskey] combinations for functions within the software. Users of these tools will not be able to use the accesskeys within the Bushbury Hill site.
Tabbing
You can also use the Tab key on your keyboard to move between links on a page. A single press of Tab highlights the next link, shift+Tab highlights the previous link.
The links within a page have been given a logical tab-order: tabbing will lead you through the primary navigation (at the top) first, then through the secondary navigation (in the right hand column)
Resizing text
If you would prefer the content text on the Bushbury Hill website to be larger (or smaller), you can adjust this through your browser. In Internet Explorer, go to "View --> Text Size" then select one of the size options.
Other browser software usually has a similar feature - normally under the "View" menu option.
