Year 5
This term our hardworking Year 5 children are finding out about lots of different topics.
In science we are looking at healthy living. We are finding out the importance of a healthy diet and regular exercise. Over the topic we are going to measure heart rate and how exercise can affect it. We will carry out lots of interesting investigations during the term.
In D.T. our topic is biscuits. So far we have discussed the reasons why there are so many different types of biscuits available in our shops. We have also tasted a wide range of biscuits and evaluated them on taste, appearance, appeal and texture. In future weeks we are going to be making our own biscuits and will design packaging to appeal to a specific audience.
In R.E. will have looked at the different symbols in the Christian religion. We have found out the reasons why they are used in their religion. We visited St Mary’s Church and were able to ask the vicar lots of questions about the symbols that we found in the church. This half term we are focusing on looking at symbols within the Hindu religion and will compare them to Christian ones.
In geography our topic is water and rivers. The children have so far looked at maps and around the school for water sources in our local area. We have also used the internet and books from our school library to prepare a presentation based on different rivers from around the world. We focused on the River Nile, The Thames, The Mississippi and The Ganges.
Can you answer these questions?
- Where is the world’s longest river?
- What is the name of the world’s second longest river?
- Can you name 3 rivers in the U.K.?
- In which country is the Mississippi River?
We are also going on a trip to the canal in Wolverhampton where we will be spending 3 days in total over the space of a month. We will find out about the canal and how it links to the Victorians, which we will study next term.
