Year 6

Spring 2nd ½ term in Year 6

Dear Pupils, Parents and Guardians,

Here we go – another exciting ½ term! This will hopefully be one of the most successful, exciting and memorable years for your child as they are now the oldest in the school, prepare for their secondary education, take their SAT’s exams and perform the end of year production! This term we are still studying Britain Since 1930, mainly World War II but are moving onto the nifty 50’s, swinging 60’s and 70’s and looking at the changes that have taken place in history right up to the present day – fascinating! We have just had a theatre group called ‘Pack up your troubles’, come and perform for us and if that’s not enough, in addition to all this, we will be having a year six trip to Cannock to visit the WWII museum!

SATs

We are busy beavers at present in Year Six, revising and preparing for our Special Quiz (SAT’s). These will take place between Monday 8th May and Friday 12th May this year.

Reading

As the pupils prepare for their next schools, the importance of developing their independent learning and organisational skills is vital. Reading is the key to all learning and children should be reading for at least 10 minutes every day. Children need to read a variety of books, comics and magazines and should practise reading aloud to develop expression too. Please help your child at home with their reading and make comments in their reading record book.

Diary – Homework book / School Liaison Book

Each child will have a red homework diary in which to write any homework, diary notes or messages. It will be given out on a Monday and needs to be handed in by Friday. Parents please also use this book to make comments on their reading, home learning and write any messages to Mrs Davies and myself, which we will respond to promptly. These can be given to us as and when but we will look at all of them on a Friday. On a daily basis, homework will consist of reading, spelling, tables and revision (children should be spending a maximum of 30 minutes per night) and then on a Monday, homework relating to the Literacy, Numeracy and Science targets will be given out. This will go out on a Monday and the children will have the whole week to complete these tasks. The deadline for handing in homework will therefore be the Friday of that week, leaving their weekends free! Any child who has not handed it in by then will be required to complete it during golden time.

Spellings

Spellings are given out on a half termly basis and tested each Friday. A record is kept of their progress with these and each child will be given a review sheet at the end of each ½ term. Any child getting 3 or more wrong is required to retest during break time in the following week.

Tables and Division Facts

As part of their daily homework the children will be practising these and will be tested on a weekly basis. The aim is to achieve their gold award on the multiplication / division bonds and if they complete this, further challenges will be set!

PE

6A’s days for PE this ½ term will be on Mondays and Thursdays. Children are required to wear trainers or bare feet on a Monday and have their full outdoor kit in on Thursdays.
6B’s days will be on Mondays and Wednesdays. Children will not be allowed to borrow kits from siblings. If your child is unable to take part in the PE lesson, for whatever reason, they will be given written work related to that particular lesson.

Classroom Helpers

Mrs Davies and myself would be most grateful for any offers of help for hearing readers, this could be on a weekly basis or an if and when. Please let me know if you are able to help.

Mondays

Things can sometimes get mislaid, so on a Monday your child should bring home the following:

I hope that you will find this information helpful and we will all enjoy your child’s last year at Bushbury. Please feel free to come and see us, should you have any problems / concerns.
